Lai, the man

This is a story about LAO LAI, Lai is his surname. In Chinese, people add "LAO" in front of the surname to express respect. LAO means old. Actually, LAO LAi is not old, he just turned 30 this month. As you can tell my English is not good, esp. written English, but i will try my best to tell you the story about him, about his gay life in London.

Lai grown up in Beijing, China. Then he went to US to study, now he live in London. He has a doctoral degree, but he never think he is expert in his area, he just was a smart student always get good marks. He always think he can do something else.

Lai is a quite arty person, he has very good eyes to judge color, pattern, those kinda things. When he was in university, he can use simple material to decorate the same format boring dormitory to WOW all his female housemates. Even when he was a child, he won quite a lot prizes about painting, and a very famous artist volunteered to teach him, but his parents refused. Back to that time, Chinese parents do not like their children to waste time on other things. Ironically, if you visit China nowadays, you will find things are totally different now.

Lai knows he is gay at very late age. In his early twenties, he was busy chasing girls. Lai was very good at writing love letters at that time, all those girl friends think he was very romantic nice bloke. Occasionally he might looked at a good looking man, but normally it is just jealous, nothing in a sexual way. After he moved abroad, he noticed he began to change. Gradually, he started to check out guys instead of girls when he was walking down the streets. As he grow up in a very traditional family, Lai struggle a lot to accept his sexuality. Even now he still live in the closet. He does not want his friends, colleagues know about his private life. Many times, there are girls show interest about him, or some friends want to introduce him a nice girl. All he can do it to find excuses to refuse. Sometimes, he feel sorry, for both him and the girl. "She is such a nice girl! If only i met her a few years ago", he said, "but now i changed".

Deep down, Lai is very genuine, romantic person. He used to worry where he can find his dream girl, but nowadays he does not dream any more about Mr Right. As he found, it is way too difficult for a shy introvert guy like him to achieve that. But, sometimes he still can not help dreaming. He took a job in London, mostly because he would like to meet more gay people, to live his life more happy and free.

Lai sometime miss his parents a lot, but he does not want to tell them the truth, he has to live far far away from them. He does not want to hurt his parents, as he can understand the consequences. Every time he called, Mum always asking about his beautiful Japanese Girl friend. Actually she is his friend, a girl he like as sister.

As for gay life, Lai also struggle to mix into the gay world in London. He is shy, introvert, not so keen about noisy filthy gay scene. Occasionally Lai visit gay bar with friends, or his dates, but he really does not like it. The loud music, the smoke, the attention from strangers, give him headache. He does not know how to behave when someone try to chat him up. Normally, he only can manage to say something polite then escape ASAP.

Here is the story about his life, the guys he met, the story happened in his life, the experience worth recording.

半中岁月尽幽闲,
半之受用无边.
半华半实庭轩,
半山半水田园.
饮酒半酣正好,
花开半吐偏妍.
百年苦乐半相参,
会占便宜只半.
